A few fun art facts:
• The first acrylic paint was created in the 1940s by Leonard Bocour and Sam Golden. It became commercially available in the 1950s.
• The Mona Lisa became famous overnight, after it was stolen in 1911 from the Louvre. Before this she was wasn’t as well known to the world. It took more than 24 hours to even notice she was missing from the museum. It has been debated how long it took Leonardo da Vinci to finish painting her, some say 3 -7 years.
• Van Gogh only sold one painting his entire art career, before committing suicide in 1890.
• In 1948 art competitions were part of the Summer Olympics.
• Georgia O’Keefe was named after her grandfather, George Totto. Her middle name was Totto.
• The world’s largest art museum is the Louvre, with a gallery sapce of 72,735 sq ft. It first opened in 1793. The word museum comes from the latin word “musea” which denotes a place dedicated to the muses. There are more than 55,000 museums in the world, the Louvre is the most visited annually.
• There are over 70 art museums devoted to just one artist. The Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh is the largest single artist museum in the United States.
