"One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple."  — Jack Kerouac

This is a simple, but fun exercise, using words, paper, collage, wax, and a little oil paint.

You will need to find a word or quote you would like to use.

Gesso your paper.

Add a layer of collage using wax and heat to fuse each layer together.

You will want your under layer to be contrasting with the top layer, so if the under layer is light you will want to use a dark paint on top.

The word I found to use is Illumination.

I used a woody pencil to sketch it out on to the collaged background.  I then used white wax paint to fill in the area around the letters.

Once I filled in the whole piece around the letters, I added a light layer of oil paint, wiping the excess off with Acetone. This helped to pull out the texture from the layers below.

With all these encaustic lessons, you can use GEL Medium in place of the wax, if you don't want to try or invest in the whole encaustic process.
