I think charcoal is such a wonderful medium to work in and can be even more exciting when you add other mediums to it, like watercolor and water soluble crayons.
This exercise is about being expressive, messy, and paying attention to contrast while drawing with line. I demonstrate multiple drawings in this lesson, trying to make each a little different.
I used a variety of charcoal and tinted charcoal pencils and worked on drawing paper. I also used powdered charcoal, which is nice to use, but you don't have to buy it if you want to try it, just take one of your charcoal pencils or sticks and a piece of sandpaper and rub the charcoal over it to create a fine powder.
